During the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic Wally came to me with the wish to take his two greatest plays, Designated Mourner, and Grasses of a Thousand Colors, and create legacy performances as podcasts. We had performed each play several times, but always in intimate venues with small audiences. Since everything was now cancelled, all the original actors were available. So,building on all the work of over 20 years by the director of the staged performances, Andre Gregory, we created a way to perform together over the internet from our various locations, It took half a year first reinventing the plays for a podcast, recording wonderful vocal performances for the intimacy of the lone listener in headphones, and creating the sonic textures, and music to support the text. For me it was a most wonderful collaboration with Wally, Andre, and all the members of the original cast. A great project to work on during the covid sequestration, and one that speaks to the times in a profound way.
